Program Options at GJHS
Special Education programs available on all levels of the Least Restrictive Environment
General Education: Students’ participation in the general education curriculum is not limited by IEP status. Students are provided reasonable accommodations and modifications to support participation in the general education curriculum whenever possible.
General Education Courses with Skill Lab (pull-out) Support: Students enrolled in this service model participate in general education curriculum as required by the district. Weekly direct instruction is taught by special education teachers. This class setting is appropriate for a student who is approaching grade level standards and requires some skill remediation.
Resource Classes: Offered to eligible students as determined by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
Resource: Resource classes are available in the following areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and SELF (study skills). These classes are smaller classes with modified content to meet the needs of the students. Research based specialized instruction is provided to remediate students’ documented disability areas. Resource classes are appropriate for students working significantly below grade level, and placement is determined by documented need area and curriculum based placement testing.
  • Resource Math Curriculum: TransMath Books 1, 2, 3
  • Resource Science
  • Resource Social Studies
  • Resource Language Arts Curriculum: Language! Books A/B, C/D, E/F
Self-Contained: S.C.I.L.L.S.: Structured Classroom for Intensive Learning of Language Skills. Students in self-contained programs are educated to the greatest extent with their non-disabled peers. This occurs through supported participation in general education electives, involvement in Best Buddies club, Unified P.E. and enrollment in resource academic classes whenever appropriate.

Specialized Educational Learning Foundations (SELF) Elective Class

This course is designed to provide students with focused instruction and strategies related to improving executive functioning skills. Topics covered include organization, time management, test-taking strategies, effective study techniques, note taking, self-advocacy, and problem solving.

IEP Team Members:
Parents
Parents are important members of the students educational team. We look forward to working in partnership with you to help your child show growth in his/her academic endeavors.

Student
Your child will hear the word ‘self-advocacy’ often in the next few years. It is a life skill that we will help the students learn and master while at GJHS. We encourage students to learn to ask for what they need and ask clarifying questions. We encourage students to know about their IEP accommodations and invite students to attend their IEP meetings.

Case Managers
Each student on an IEP will be assigned a case manager during first quarter. This case manager will serve as a contact for you and your student, will organize annual review of the students IEP and will work with special education and general education teachers to support teachers in implementing your child’s individual education plan.

General Education Teachers/Counselors and Administrators
Your child will be supported by all of the services provided at GJHS. We work as a team to meet your child’s individual needs and help them reach their highest potential!

Parent Communication: The special education department reinforces the student’s use of a PRIDE planner and Infinite Campus for progress monitoring. You will hear more about these processes during the first quarter of school. These parent communication tools are used district wide and will help you and your child stay informed of the classroom assignments and projects.
